For years, Vegans have known that a plant-based diet leads to better health, not only for humans but for the planet as well. Reducing meat consumption and sugar intake, all while eating twice as many vegetables, nuts and fruits; is the best possible diet for anyone.

Scientists have dubbed this the Planetary Health Diet. So what are Earth and her inhabitants to do?

Is this a change for the better?

Scientists go so far as to claim that switching to the Planetary Health Diet will save hundreds of thousands of lives. The diet requires huge cuts in red meat usage and global changes the likes of which have never been accomplished before. It is daunting but aims to save the planet and save her people. Diet is a leading cause of ill health, the world over. The winds of change are blowing and if the world doesn’t follow suit, fall in line, we can all too soon kiss our planet goodbye. No one wants to hear that, so changing the way the world eats, grows food and provides for her people is in the best interest of all now and in the future.

In a report by The Lancet, Professor Walter Willett, MD et al have professed that “Because much of the world’s population is inadequately nourished and many environmental systems and processes are pushed beyond safe boundaries by food production, a global transformation of the food system is urgently needed.”Vegan recipes are growing in popularity with homemakers trying “meatless Mondays” (or even fasting) when their families aren’t looking. It’s a slow progression, but home cooks are seeking more and more vegan dinner recipes. PICKLD’s vegan seasonings are championing the movement and providing home cooks with a means to completely revolutionize dinner with their legume containing vegan spices in various flavours.

Where are the most changes required?

The cost of sustaining life on this planet could very well cost us the thing we rely on most, the planet we all live on, so change is required. 37 well-known specialists and scientists worked tirelessly for three years to come up with the Planetary Health Diet and have decided that the world consumes too much red meat and too many starchy foods, some laden with sugar. It recommends cutting consumption of these foods by about 50%!

In addition, the world’s consumption of fruits, nuts and vegetables must double! For some, this is not news, but a way of life. Others are quaking in their boots. The diet itself boasts a 2500 calorie per day allowance. That sounds like a lot to anyone that is used to counting calories. It means that half a dinner plate changes to fruits and veggies and 1/3 becomes whole grain cereals. Meat is consumable in minuscule amounts on a weekly basis. The meat amounts sound minimal to those in the UK and US; however the rest of the world generally comes pretty close to those guidelines, especially for meat.

What is the outlook?

Scientists as a whole were not overly enthusiastic that the world would easily adapt this Planetary Health Diet. There is a large global problem that stems from the inequality of food in many areas of the world.

The Lancet report states, “Although global food production of calories has kept pace with population growth, more than 820 million people have insufficient food and many more consume low-quality diets that cause micronutrient deficiencies and contribute to a substantial rise in the incidence of diet-related obesity and diet-related non-communicable diseases, including coronary heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.”
